. . . when you help save a life!

In response to inequities in the availability of anti-retroviral treatment (ART) and the growing number of children being orphaned by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in Sub-Saharan Africa, American Foundation for Children with AIDS has implemented a life-saving program to deliver free ARV medications and supplies to HIV+ children, their HIV+ caretakers and HIV+ pregnant women. Not only do we provide anti-retroviral medicine, but we provide medication to fight opportunistic infections such as tuberculosis, malaria, oral thrush, and AIDS-related cancers. Medical supplies and humanitarian relief are also delivered to the programs we support on an as-need basis.

Each of the programs we support is unique:

Uganda: AFCA provides life-saving medicine to Mulago Hospital’s Pediatric Infectious Disease Center (PIDC) in Kampala.  Under PIDC’s care, we also provide medical supplies and equipment for delivery and use in rural clinics serving HIV+ people.  These items include such things as hospital beds, wheelchairs, crutches, syringes, needles, catheters, examination tables, sutures, and lamps.

Kenya: We provide anti-retroviral medicine to our partners in Nairobi, Elementita, and Voi for the children they care for. AFCA also collaborates with our partner hospitals, clinics and orphanage in Mombasa, Nairobi, Voi and Elementita to provide them with ATMIT (easily digestible oat based porridge), blankets, hygiene kits, nursery kits, and other necessities specifically intended for AIDS orphans who must fend for themselves.

Zimbabwe: We partner with a local non-governmental organization called ZOE (Zimbabwe Orphans through Extended Hands), which extends care to over 76,000 AIDS orphans.  AFCA provides antibiotics for HIV+ children and living HIV+ guardians, keeping full-flown AIDS at bay.
